![]() ![]() "Rainbow" has the great reggae sound of the best from Steel Pulse, again without aping their unique music. "Green Camouflage" has the most Marley-like sound without sounding like yet another Marley-clone. The big song on this CD is the title song, "Time for Change." It has an anthem quality and got worked over in a video during Obama's campaign (this one is also on YouTube and on the Kirton's website). Nonetheless, his other CDs are definitely worth getting hold of " Stranger " (1998) and " Modern Roots " (2000). This CD is excellent and Kirton's best so far. The music caught me, then I noticed an odd thing about his band in the video: all of the players were former CSI TV actor Gary Dourdan. He first gained recognition with a performance in 1999 at Midem Cannes, after which a Rolling Stone Magazine writer called him "unquestionably the most impressive new act at Midem." I discovered his music only because I happened to click into a TV program that was playing his video of "Free to Fly" from this CD, a gorgeous reggae/soul number (check out the video on YouTube). It will need to be approved by council before any change is made.Where have the record producers been hiding David Kirton? Perhaps he has missed the big spotlight because he is from Barbados, while most reggae stars are Jamaican, with a few Africans thrown in. The motion will be made at the governance and priorities committee on Monday morning. "We're correcting what wasn't reported by historians back in the day." "A lot of people say that we're changing history and we're not changing history," he said. ![]() While Kirton is open to helping people living on the street with monetary assistance to change their identification, he still believes the name should be changed. In letters to council, some people living on the street said it would be a hassle to change IDs and mailing addresses, while another said Macdonald's status as a prime minister should be remembered and preserved. Not everyone is happy with the prospect of changing the road's name. Far from sounding or looking like a low budget project Kirton and his team have been able to pull together an award winning album, three top quality music videos and a Barrack Obama Time for Change Music video remix that rivals the quality and vision of any high budget project done today. While Kirton likes the name, he said it's important to hear from more people in the community before making the decision. "But then, Tribal Chief Mark Arcand with the Saskatoon Tribal Council made that call last week and it was just so easy to follow that up."Įarlier this month, in a news conference with Mayor Charlie Clark, Chief Arcand asked that the road be renamed Reconciliation Road. "I knew that I was too emotional to do that," he said. He said he initially wanted to make the motion directly after the revelations at the Kamloops school, but decided to wait. Kirton is Métis and represents Ward 3, the area where the road is located. The issue has gained momentum lately after the preliminary discovery of remains of 215 children at unmarked burial sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
